Privately owned housing starts in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,366,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This is 9.8% below December 2024 and 0.7% below January 2024.

Privately owned housing units authorized by building permits in January were 0.1% above December and 1.7% below January 2024.
Single-family authorizations in January were virtually unchanged from December. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were 427,000 in January.
Housing completions in January were 7.6% above December and 9.8% above January 2024. Single-family housing completions in January were 7.1% above December. The January rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 652,000.
