Why This Matters to Distributors: The Granite Group’s latest expansion illustrates how regional distributors are pursuing growth through a combination of acquisitions and new locations. As consolidation continues across plumbing and HVAC distribution, scale, geographic coverage and local customer relationships remain key competitive advantages.
The Granite Group has expanded into New York and strengthened its presence in Maine through two acquisitions and a new branch opening, continuing a growth strategy that combines acquisitions with geographic expansion.
The Concord, New Hampshire-based distributor announced June 1 that it acquired Hynes Plumbing Supply in Plattsburgh, New York, and P&E Supply in Sanford, Maine. The company also plans to open a new branch this month in Caribou, Maine.
The transactions mark The Granite Group’s entry into New York, extending its reach across the Northeast at a time when distributors continue to pursue acquisitions to expand market coverage and increase scale.
The acquisition of Hynes Plumbing Supply gives The Granite Group its first location in New York. The Plattsburgh distributor was founded four years ago by John Hynes and operates alongside the Hynes family’s electrical supply business, which has served the region since 1955.
The company said the acquisition will allow customers to access a broader range of plumbing, heating, cooling and electrical products from a single location while benefiting from expanded inventory and ecommerce capabilities.
“As our business grew, it became clear there was an opportunity to do more for our customers,” Hynes said. “The Granite Group brings the scale, resources and shared values to help us take that next step.”
The Granite Group also acquired P&E Supply, a plumbing distributor founded in Sanford, Maine, in 1982. The company has served contractors and homeowners throughout southern Maine and is known for its plumbing supply operation and kitchen and bath showroom business.
Paul Kenney, who has led P&E Supply with his wife, Debbie, for more than two decades, said the acquisition will provide customers with access to additional products and resources while preserving the company’s local service model.
Separately, The Granite Group is opening a branch in Caribou, extending its network into northern Maine near the Canadian border. The new location is expected to begin serving contractors and customers later this month.
Chief Executive Officer Bill Condron said the company’s growth strategy remains focused on expanding its regional presence while maintaining local customer relationships.
The Granite Group distributes plumbing, heating, cooling, piping, water systems and energy products throughout the Northeast. The company operates more than 75 wholesale branches and 20 retail kitchen, bath and lighting showrooms.
The expansion comes as consolidation remains active across plumbing, HVAC and building products distribution, with regional distributors using acquisitions and branch investments to increase market density, improve service capabilities and compete more effectively with larger national rivals.
