Holston Gases Acquires Athens Gas and Welding, Expands Georgia Footprint

Why This Matters to Distributors: Regional distributors are using acquisitions to deepen local coverage and broaden offerings, increasing competitive pressure on smaller independents.

Holston Gases has acquired Athens Gas and Welding Supply Inc., adding a fifth location in Georgia and expanding its presence in the Southeast, the company said.

The transaction closed March 31. Terms were not disclosed.

Athens Gas and Welding, based in northeast Georgia, supplies industrial gases and welding products. The deal increases Holston’s network to 46 locations across Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Holston Gases President Joe Baxter said the acquisition strengthens the company’s position in a key regional market.

“We are excited to add the Athens Gas and Welding employees, customers, and product lines to those of Holston Gases,” Baxter said. “This is a perfect fit. Athens Gas and Welding has an outstanding reputation in Northeast Georgia and we look forward to partnering with them to enhance the offerings they can provide their customers.”

Athens Gas and Welding owner Lance McMurray said the companies have a longstanding relationship and complementary operations.

“We are very proud to become part of the larger Holston Gases family,” McMurray said. “Combining with Holston’s people and resources will be great for our customers. We’ve known the Holston Gases folks for a long time, and we think a lot of them. Our customers will really benefit from this combination.”

Holston Gases distributes industrial, medical and specialty gases, along with propane, welding equipment, safety products, and industrial supplies. The Knoxville, Tennessee-based company has operated for more than 67 years.

The acquisition reflects continued consolidation among industrial gas and welding supply distributors, as regional players expand through local deals to increase market density and service capabilities.
