Food and Beverage Capital Projects Rebound in June, Driving New Opportunities for Industrial Distributors

Why This Matters to Distributors: Capital spending by food and beverage manufacturers accelerated in June, creating new opportunities for distributors to supply material handling, automation, electrical, HVAC, compressed air, packaging, and warehouse equipment. The strong mix of modernization and expansion projects suggests manufacturers continue investing in productivity and supply chain capacity despite broader economic uncertainty.

Food and beverage manufacturers stepped up capital investment in June, announcing 59 new projects across North America, a 15.7% increase from May, according to the latest industrial project tracking report from Industrial SalesLeads.

The increase reflects renewed investment in manufacturing facilities, warehouse capacity, and equipment modernization, offering a positive demand signal for distributors serving the food processing sector with industrial products, automation systems, electrical equipment, and material handling solutions.

Processing facilities accounted for 40 of the newly identified projects, while 23 involved distribution centers and industrial warehouses. By project type, companies announced 15 new construction projects, 12 facility expansions and 32 renovation or equipment modernization projects. Researchers also tracked nine planned plant closures.

Project activity was concentrated in several manufacturing-heavy states. Ohio led with five announced projects, followed by California, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington with four each. Illinois, Iowa, Virginia, and Wisconsin each recorded three projects.

The report indicates continued demand across a broad range of industrial equipment categories. Material handling and storage equipment was specified in 87% of projects, making it the most frequently identified category. Compressed air systems appeared in 85% of projects, followed by lighting and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment at 84% and conveyors, cranes, and hoists at 82%.

Loading dock equipment, mechanical construction, fire protection systems and networking and security equipment were each identified in 80% of projects. Control systems and instrumentation appeared in 61%, while packaging equipment, process equipment, heat exchangers, and air emissions control equipment were included in 56% of projects. Stainless steel tanks and vessels were specified in 53%, and floor coatings in 43%.

The largest project announced during the month is a $200 million expansion and equipment modernization of H-E-B’s food processing facility in Arabi, Louisiana. Construction recently began, with completion expected in 2028. Industrial SalesLeads identified two food and beverage projects valued at more than $100 million during June.

Other significant projects include an $85 million renovation and expansion of a skincare and nutritional supplement manufacturing facility in Roanoke, Virginia; a $75 million poultry processing expansion in Ellijay, Georgia; and a $47 million warehouse expansion by a grain marketing and transportation company in Mount Vernon, Indiana.

The report also identified several distribution-related investments. A food service distributor plans to renovate and upgrade a recently acquired 333,400-square-foot distribution center in West Coxsackie, New York, while a grocery distributor is planning a $10 million warehouse and office expansion in Louisville, Kentucky.

For distributors, the report offers an early look at where industrial spending is heading. While new plant construction remained steady, the larger share of projects involved facility upgrades and equipment replacements, underscoring manufacturers’ continued focus on improving productivity, expanding capacity, and modernizing operations. Those trends are expected to support demand for automation, electrical products, fluid power, material handling equipment, industrial safety products and related maintenance, repair, and operations supplies.
