Why This Matters to Distributors: A new cooperative purchasing contract gives county governments another way to buy supplies through Amazon Business. The agreement adds price ceilings and purchasing controls to its marketplace offering, increasing competition for distributors serving public agencies.
Amazon Business is expanding its government purchasing channels through a new cooperative contract offered by Public Promise Procurement, a program of the National Association of Counties.
The nationally solicited agreement gives counties access to more than 300 million products and hundreds of thousands of third-party sellers, according to NACo. It includes fixed-term price ceilings across eight product categories and purchasing tools that allow agencies to prioritize local and in-state businesses.
Douglas County, Nebraska, served as the lead public agency for solicitation.
Counties can activate the agreement through their existing Amazon Business account executive, NACo said. The contract works alongside an existing Amazon Prime membership and provides tools for customizing how agencies spend.
For distributors serving county governments, the agreement adds a competitive challenge beyond product pricing and delivery. Amazon Business is pairing its marketplace with a publicly solicited purchasing arrangement and controls intended to help agencies manage spending.
NACo said the contract went through Public Promise Procurement’s member-governed, peer-reviewed process. Douglas County purchasing officials are scheduled to discuss how the solicitation was developed during the webinar.
The public event description does not identify the eight categories covered by the price ceilings or how long those ceilings apply. It also does not specify the contract’s award date, duration or purchasing commitments, leaving key details of its scope undisclosed.
The agreement adds to Amazon Business’s broader expansion. In July, Amazon said the business had reached $60 billion in annualized gross sales during the second quarter and served more than 11 million organizations worldwide. More than 1.8 million organizations joined during the first half of 2026, the company said.
The annualized gross sales figure measures purchasing volume through Amazon Business, rather than revenue recognized by Amazon.
