Helena Dumont Buys SMP Supply, Adds Industrial Products and Technical Services

Why This Matters to Distributors: The acquisition pairs an ownership transition with investment in a distributor whose offerings extend beyond products to valve automation, testing, machining, and fabrication.

Houston investment firm Helena Dumont has acquired SMP Supply, a distributor of pipe, valves, fittings, and flanges serving industrial and energy customers. The transaction closed Oct. 19 and was announced Oct. 30. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 1987, SMP Supply serves power generation, petrochemical, and oil and gas customers. It supplies commodity and specialty products, combining its distribution business with services that prepare and modify equipment for customer applications.

Those services include valve automation, modifications to valve ends and internal components, and hydrostatic testing. SMP also offers machining, pipe and structural coatings, and off-site fabrication and galvanizing of supports, according to its website. The capabilities give the company a role in preparing, adapting, and testing products alongside supplying them.

SMP lists five offices across Texas and Louisiana, including its corporate office in Baytown, Texas, and a midstream office in Houston. Additional offices are in Victoria and Odessa, Texas, and Gonzales, Louisiana. The company says the network serves customers nationwide.

Under the ownership change, SMP will retain its name and employees, while its founders transition out of the business. Adam Britt, Helena Dumont’s president and CEO, is serving as SMP’s interim CEO and will lead daily operations with SMP President Michelle Russell and Keith Thomas.

“SMP Supply has spent nearly four decades earning the trust of its customers,” Britt said. He said Helena Dumont would invest in employees and provide capital and operating resources for growth. Russell said the backing would support expansion while maintaining customer service.

Helena Dumont, founded in 2019, acquires and operates industrial, real estate and service businesses. Fifth Third Bank served as senior lender for the acquisition.
