GMS Acquires South Texas Distributor Central Materials

Why This Matters to Distributors: The acquisition expands GMS’s presence in the fast-growing South Texas construction market and strengthens its position in specialty exterior building products. It also reflects continued consolidation among building products distributors as companies seek to broaden product offerings and deepen regional market coverage.

GMS Inc. has acquired the assets of Central Materials, a South Texas distributor specializing in stucco, exterior insulation and finish systems, stone, masonry, and related cladding products.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition adds two locations serving the Rio Grande Valley and expands GMS’s footprint in South Texas, a market that has sustained residential and commercial construction growth.

“We are excited to welcome Central Materials and its highly respected, customer service-oriented team of product experts to GMS,” says CEO John C. Turner Jr.

Turner said the acquisition supports the company’s strategy of expanding its complementary product offerings while strengthening its presence in the South Texas market. He added that Central Materials’ vendor relationships in stucco, EIFS and cladding products will help broaden product availability throughout the region.

Founded 15 years ago, Central Materials has built a regional presence supplying specialty exterior building materials to contractors across South Texas.

Under the agreement, Central Materials will continue operating under its existing name and branding. Founding partners Cesar Guzman and Alejandro Barrera will remain with the business and continue managing operations in coordination with GMS’s Southwest Division leadership.

“We feel that GMS shares our values and will be able to make Central Materials grow even more,” Guzman and Barrera said in a joint statement.

The transaction marks another step in GMS’s expansion strategy under the ownership of SRS Distribution and parent company The Home Depot. GMS operates more than 320 distribution centers across the United States and Canada, supplying wallboard, ceilings, steel framing, and related building products to residential and commercial contractors. The company also operates 100 tool sales, rental and service centers.

The acquisition underscores ongoing consolidation in the building products distribution sector as distributors seek scale, expanded product portfolios, and stronger positions in high-growth regional markets.
