McKesson Bets on AI to Strengthen Healthcare Distribution

Why This Matters to Distributors: McKesson is pairing AI, automation and specialty healthcare services with its nationwide distribution network to deepen customer relationships and improve efficiency. The strategy reflects how healthcare distributors are competing on technology and value-added services, not just pharmaceutical delivery.

McKesson Corp. is expanding its focus on artificial intelligence, specialty oncology services, and digital distribution capabilities as it strengthens its position across the healthcare supply chain.

The healthcare distributor highlighted those initiatives in its Fiscal Year 2026 Impact Report. The report, which covers April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026, outlines the company’s progress in workforce development, customer partnerships, community investment, and environmental sustainability.

Among the report’s operational highlights, McKesson said it distributed approximately one-third of the medicines used in the United States while maintaining more than 99% inventory and order accuracy through its automated, digitally connected distribution network.

The company also said it continued expanding community-based cancer care through The U.S. Oncology Network, which supports approximately 3,300 independent oncology providers. McKesson said the network helps physician practices deliver advanced therapies, participate in clinical trials, and manage increasingly complex cancer treatments closer to where patients live.

Artificial intelligence emerged as another major focus of the report.

McKesson said more than 95% of its wired employees participated in digital learning programs designed to prepare the workforce for what it described as a “human-led AI future.” The company also introduced its McKesson Leadership Prescription, a leadership framework that combines its I²CARE values with LEADRx behaviors to help employees adapt to changing technologies and customer needs.

“At McKesson, impact is at the heart of our strategy and embedded in how we operate every day,” Nimesh Jhaveri, executive vice president and chief impact officer, said in a statement. “This year’s report reflects our progress in strengthening healthcare for the providers, patients and communities we serve today, while building the capabilities needed for tomorrow. As healthcare grows more complex, our focus remains simple: Advancing Health Outcomes for All.”

Beyond its operations, McKesson reported contributing more than $17 million through the company and the McKesson Foundation to nonprofit organizations and community initiatives during fiscal 2026. Employees also logged 40,000 volunteer hours with more than 700 charitable organizations across the United States and Canada.

The report also highlighted McKesson’s sustainability initiatives, including its work with the National Academy of Medicine’s Climate Collaborative and Guidehouse to help suppliers reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build a more resilient healthcare supply chain.

While the report focuses on environmental, social and governance initiatives, it also illustrates how one of the nation’s largest healthcare distributors is broadening its role beyond pharmaceutical logistics.

McKesson is combining the scale of its distribution network with digital capabilities, workforce development, and specialty healthcare services to create additional value for providers. Those investments are intended to improve operational efficiency, support patient care, and strengthen customer relationships as healthcare providers seek more integrated supply chain and technology partners.

The report also underscores McKesson’s expanding role across healthcare. By distributing one-third of the nation’s medicines while supporting approximately 3,300 oncology providers and preparing its workforce to operate in an AI-enabled environment, the company continues to position itself as both a healthcare distributor and a technology-enabled services provider.
