UK Distributor AIC Gets $16.3 Million Investment for Management Buyout

Why This Matters to Distributors: The private equity investment will give Automotive & Industrial Consumables additional capital to expand its product offering and geographic reach while investing in sales, digital operations and data and artificial intelligence analytics.

UK distributor Automotive & Industrial Consumables Ltd. has received a £12 million ($16.3 million) investment from Foresight Group to finance a management buyout and support expansion.

The Leeds, England-based distributor imports and distributes automotive, electrical, and industrial consumables and supplies more than 6,100 products to more than 5,500 customers across the UK, Europe, and the U.S., according to Foresight.

Financial terms beyond the £12 million investment were not disclosed, including AIC’s valuation or the ownership stakes held by Foresight and management following the transaction.

AIC serves the automotive aftermarket, electrical installation, construction, and general industrial markets. The company also has international sourcing operations.

Foresight said the investment will support additional spending on sales and marketing, website improvements, and product expansion, as well as greater use of data and AI-driven analytics. The investor also said AIC plans to expand into additional product categories and geographic markets, although it did not identify specific markets or provide a timetable.

The management buyout is being led by AIC’s existing senior management team: Managing Director Prakash Patel, finance director Jake Bury, sales director Neil Hodson and procurement director Raj Patel.

“The management team has been driving the business for many years and is excited to take this next step,” Patel said. “With Foresight’s backing, we can invest behind a clear growth strategy, strengthen our market position and unlock opportunities that were previously out of reach.”

Foresight said it plans to work with AIC’s management team on expansion, market share, and operational improvements.

Andrew Wakelin will join AIC as chair as part of the investment. Wakelin has more than 35 years of experience in industrial distribution and most recently was group operations director at Aspen Pumps. Foresight said his experience includes operational improvement and international expansion.

Richard Ralph, investment director at Foresight, said the firm sees opportunities to expand AIC into additional product categories and geographic markets.

“We believe there is significant opportunity to accelerate growth through entering new product and geographic markets,” Ralph said.

The AIC transaction is Foresight’s fifth investment in Yorkshire and the Northeast over the past 12 months. Other investments cited by Foresight include Alan Wood & Partners, Connective3, Federal and Envoke.

AIC and Foresight did not disclose the distributor’s annual revenue, earnings, or terms detailing how ownership will be divided following the management buyout.
