White Cap Expands Use of AI in Supply Chain Operations

Why This Matters to Distributors: White Cap is adding artificial intelligence technology to support routine supply chain processes, joining a growing number of large distributors exploring AI applications beyond customer service and ecommerce. The initiative could reduce manual work and improve operational efficiency, although White Cap has not disclosed the scope of the implementation, projected savings, or performance targets.

White Cap, one of North America’s largest distributors of specialty construction supplies and safety products, is expanding its use of artificial intelligence to support supply chain operations.

The Atlanta-based distributor has selected Augment as an AI technology provider. The agreement calls for the use of Augment’s AI platform, known as Augie, to support routine operational workflows that have traditionally required manual work by distribution employees.

The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement, implementation schedule or specific business processes targeted for automation.

White Cap operates at approximately 550 branches across North America, employs more than 12,000 people, and serves about 200,000 customers across 15 construction trades. Its product offerings include concrete accessories, construction chemicals, tools, fasteners, building materials, waterproofing products, and safety equipment.

The distributor supplies professional contractors serving commercial, residential and infrastructure construction markets. Its operations involve coordinating purchasing, inventory, fulfillment and customer service activities across an extensive branch and distribution network.

Augment develops AI technology for supply chain and distribution businesses. Its Augie platform is designed to support repetitive operational tasks, including workflows that require employees to process information, coordinate activities, and complete administrative work.

According to Augment, the technology operates alongside employees, who retain responsibility for operational decisions. The company also said its platform does not use customers’ proprietary data to train AI models.

The announcement did not identify which White Cap departments or facilities will initially use the technology. It also did not specify whether the platform will be integrated with the distributor’s existing enterprise resource planning, warehouse management, or inventory systems.

White Cap has continued investing in its North American distribution infrastructure as it expands through acquisitions and organic growth. In August, the company opened an enterprise distribution center in the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, area, adding capacity to support its operations.

The AI initiative comes as distributors increasingly evaluate technology that can reduce administrative work and improve coordination across supply chain functions. Applications are expanding beyond customer-facing chatbots to include purchasing, inventory planning, order processing, and other operational activities.

For large distributors, the potential value of these systems lies in reducing the time employees spend on repetitive tasks while maintaining service levels across complex branch and warehouse networks. However, the operational and financial benefits depend on the scope of deployment, integration with existing systems and measurable improvements in productivity.

White Cap and Augment have not disclosed expected cost savings, labor productivity improvements, or other performance benchmarks. The companies also have not announced when the implementation will be completed or whether the technology will eventually be deployed across White Cap’s entire distribution network.
