FreightCar America Expands Rail Parts Distribution with Southern Parts Acquisition

Why This Matters to Distributors: Manufacturers continue investing in distribution and aftermarket businesses to build recurring revenue and strengthen customer relationships. The acquisition highlights the strategic value of distributors with specialized inventory, technical expertise, and established customer networks in industrial markets.

FreightCar America Inc. has expanded its aftermarket distribution business with the acquisition of Southern Parts & Equipment Inc., a Georgia-based distributor of new, used, and reconditioned railcar parts.

The Chicago-based railcar manufacturer said the acquisition is its second purchase in the railcar aftermarket within the past year. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Founded in Monroe, Georgia, Southern Parts & Equipment supplies railcar parts and equipment to railroads, repair shops, private railcar owners, and other industrial customers. The company also provides rail industry consulting, inspections, and project support services.

FreightCar America said the acquisition broadens its aftermarket distribution capabilities and expands its portfolio of railcar components and related services.

“Southern Parts & Equipment is a highly complementary addition to our growing aftermarket platform,” CEO Nicholas Randall said. “This acquisition further strengthens our ability to support customers with improved access to critical railcar components.”

The acquisition adds Southern Parts & Equipment’s customer relationships, product expertise, and sourcing capabilities to FreightCar America’s existing aftermarket business.

Michael Riordan, the company’s vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer, said the transaction aligns with FreightCar America’s strategy of expanding its aftermarket operations while strengthening customer support.

FreightCar America manufactures railroad freight cars and provides replacement parts, repair services, railcar rebuilding, and conversion services. The company has increasingly expanded its aftermarket business as part of a broader strategy to support customers throughout the life of their railcar fleets.

The acquisition reflects a broader trend among industrial manufacturers to expand aftermarket distribution operations, which can provide more consistent demand than new equipment sales. By adding distributors with established inventories, sourcing capabilities and customer relationships, manufacturers can strengthen service offerings while expanding their presence in replacement parts markets.

Founded in 1901, FreightCar America designs and manufactures railroad freight cars and supplies railcar parts and services across North America.
