Sonepar USA Earns Federal Cybersecurity Certification, Expands Access to Defense Work

Why It Matters to Distributors: The development reflects a broader shift toward stricter cybersecurity and data governance requirements, particularly for companies serving defense, energy, and infrastructure markets.

Sonepar USA has achieved Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2, meeting a key federal requirement for companies that manage sensitive government and defense-related data.

The certification, announced March 18, brings the electrical distributor into compliance with cybersecurity standards established by the U.S. Department of Defense for contractors and suppliers working with controlled unclassified information.

CMMC Level 2 requires companies to implement a defined set of security controls and maintain documented processes to protect sensitive data. The designation allows Sonepar to support customers in federally regulated sectors, including defense-related industrial manufacturing, defense contractors, and critical infrastructure such as transportation and utilities.

“We’re taking the lead in setting cybersecurity standards for distribution,” said Rob Taylor, president of Sonepar Americas. “We decided five years ago to pursue this Certification on behalf of our U.S. operating companies and made the necessary investments to meet CMMC requirements to ensure we’re well positioned to support our customers as these standards become more common.”

Taylor added that the certification “reinforces Sonepar’s role in securing customers’ data and strengthening the resilience of their supply chains,” and said similar cybersecurity requirements are becoming more common in sectors including data centers, oil and gas, and wastewater treatment.

CMMC has become a gating requirement for suppliers seeking to participate in parts of the federal procurement ecosystem. Companies without certification may be limited in their ability to participate in certain contracts or manage specific categories of government-related data.

Sonepar said the certification required investments in systems, processes, and controls across its U.S. operations. The company did not disclose the cost.

“CMMC is an extremely rigorous framework, and we’re incredibly proud of the teams who’ve helped us get here,” said Don Sarno, senior vice president of digital enterprise for Sonepar Americas. “Sonepar is advancing cybersecurity standards within the electrical distribution industry.”

For distributors, the development reflects a broader shift toward stricter cybersecurity and data governance requirements, particularly for companies serving defense, energy, and infrastructure markets. Compliance is increasingly becoming a prerequisite for participating in those sectors.

Sonepar is one of the largest electrical distributors in the United States, with multiple operating companies serving contractors, industrial customers, and utilities.Do not miss any content from Distribution Strategy Group. Join our list.
