Phillips Pet Food & Supplies is changing its top leadership as part of a long-planned succession strategy, naming a new chief executive officer while keeping its longtime leader in a strategic oversight role.
Effective July 27, the Easton, Pennsylvania-based distributor will appoint President Nick Christensen as CEO. Blaine Phillips, who has led the company for much of the past four decades, will become executive chairman.
The company said the transition has been years in the making and is intended to ensure continuity in strategy, operations, and company culture.
As executive chairman, Phillips will focus on long-term strategy, board governance and relationships with key customers, vendors, and investors. He also remains one of the company’s largest individual investors alongside Central Garden & Pet and controlling shareholder Axar Capital.
“This transition has been carefully planned, and the timing reflects the strength of what we’ve built and the readiness of our leadership bench,” Phillips said.
Phillips has played a significant role in the company’s growth over the past 40 years, helping transform what began as a family-owned feed store into a national distributor of pet food and supplies. He has served as CEO since 2021 after previously leading the company from 1981 to 2016.
He also led Phillips’ strategic joint venture with Central Garden & Pet, expanding the company’s distribution capabilities and strengthening its relationships with suppliers and retail customers.
Christensen joined Phillips in 2021 as senior vice president of operations before advancing to chief operating officer and later president. Before joining Phillips, he held leadership positions at C&S Wholesale Grocers and United Natural Foods Inc.
The company credited Christensen with improving operational performance, streamlining supply chain processes, and strengthening customer service during his tenure.
Christensen said the company will continue building its current strategy while expanding relationships with customers and suppliers.
“Our combined business has significant opportunities ahead to expand partnerships, deepen relationships and deliver improved service to both vendors and customers,” he said.
Founded in 1938, Phillips Pet Food & Supplies operates 24 distribution centers across the United States, supplying pet food, treats, toys and other products to independent pet retailers and specialty channels.
The leadership transition reflects a broader trend across wholesale distribution, where many privately held companies are implementing structured succession plans to ensure business continuity while preparing for the next generation of leadership.
Phillips said the transition will not change the company’s ownership structure or strategic direction. The company said the executive leadership team will continue working closely with Phillips in his new role as executive chairman as Christensen assumes day-to-day leadership.
