Amazon Web Services (AWS) is making a $10 billion investment in North Carolina to build out its cloud infrastructure and accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) innovation. The major expansion will center in Richmond County and is expected to position the state as a critical hub in AWS’s global network, Amazon says. AWS is the cloud computing arm of Amazon.com Inc.
The development includes the construction of new AWS data centers that will support the growing demand for generative AI and cloud computing workloads. At least 500 new high-skilled jobs will be created in fields such as data center engineering, cybersecurity, and network operations, while thousands more are expected through construction and supply chain roles.
AWS said that the new facilities will deliver the advanced computing power required to support AI applications, cloud-native development, and enterprise-scale digital transformation across industries.
As part of the investment, Amazon is rolling out workforce development initiatives in partnership with local community colleges and technical schools. Programs will offer direct training in cloud computing, fiber optic splicing, and data center operations. The company also plans to launch pre-apprenticeship and career development pathways for students and job seekers.
Amazon’s footprint in North Carolina continues to grow. Since 2010, the company has invested more than $12 billion in the state, contributing $13.1 billion to its gross domestic product (GDP) and supporting over 50,000 jobs, according to Amazon. In addition to data centers, Amazon operates fulfillment, and delivery centers and develops renewable energy projects.
“As we expand, we’re investing not only in data infrastructure but in the communities, we call home,” said David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer.
The new data centers will further Amazon’s goal of reaching 100% renewable energy usage across its operations, the company said. Construction of the facilities is scheduled to begin later this year.
