Privately‐owned housing units authorized by building permits in August 2022 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,517,000, down 10% from July 2022 and 14.4% from August 2021, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Single‐family authorizations in August were 3.5% below the revised July figure.

Privately‐owned housing starts in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,575,000, up 12.2% from July 2022, but down 0.1% from August 2021. Single‐family housing starts in August were at a rate of 935,000, up 3.4% from the July 2022 figure of 904,000.
Privately‐owned housing completions in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,342,000, down 5.4% from July 2022, but up 3.1% from August 2021. Single‐family housing completions in August were at a rate of 1,017,000, up 0.4% from the July 2022 rate of 1,013,000.
