Privately-owned housing starts in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,356,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This is 9.6% higher than the revised July estimate of 1,237,000 and 3.9% above August 2023.

Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,475,000, 4.9% above July and 6.5% below August 2023.
Single-family authorizations in August were at a rate of 967,000; this is 2.8% above July. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were 451,000 in August.
Housing completions in August were 1,788,000, up 9.2% above July. It is 30.2% higher than the August 2023 rate. Single-family housing completions in August were down 5.6% from July. The August rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 740,000.
