Single-family housing starts in December were 3.3% above November. The December rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 418,000.
An estimated 1,364,100 housing units were started in 2024, down 3.9% from 2023.
Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in December were 0.7% below November and 3.1% below December 2023. Single-family authorizations in December were 1.6% above November. There were 437,000 December authorizations in buildings with five units or more. An estimated 1,471,200 housing units were authorized by building permits in 2024, 2.6% below 2023.
Privately-owned housing completions in December were 4.8% below November and 0.8% below December 2023.
Single-family housing completions in December were 7.4% below November. The December rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 570,000. An estimated 1,627,900 housing units were completed in 2024, up 12.4% from 2023.
