Privately owned housing units authorized by building permits in October were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,416,000; this is 0.6% below September and 7.7% below October 2023. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were 393,000 in October.
Single-family authorizations in October were at a rate of 970,000; this is 6.9% below September. Housing starts for units in buildings with five units or more was 326,000 in October.
Housing completions in October were 1,614,000, down 4.4% from September. It is 16.8% higher than October 2023. Single-family housing completions in October were down 1.4% from September. The October rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 615,000.
