Performance Food Group Company said Thursday that president and chief operating officer Scott McPherson will become chief executive officer on Jan. 1, succeeding longtime CEO George Holm as part of a planned leadership transition.
Holm will move into the role of executive chair of the board on the same date and will continue working with McPherson on mergers and acquisitions, customer relationships and oversight of the company’s strategic direction, the Richmond, Virginia–based distributor said.
“It has been a privilege to be CEO of PFG, and I am proud of all that we have accomplished together,” Holm said in a statement. “With a strong team, a clear strategic vision and positive business momentum, now is the right time to implement our succession plan and the next phase of leadership for the Company.”
McPherson, who will also join Performance Food Group’s board of directors when he becomes CEO, said the company will continue to focus on customer growth, operational execution, and technology investments.
“I believe our company has tremendous growth potential as we focus on driving top-line performance—supporting our existing customers while winning new business through collaboration across our diverse segments,” McPherson said. “Operationally, we’re well positioned and will continue investing in technologies that enhance efficiency and strengthen bottom-line results.”
McPherson became president and chief operating officer of Performance Food Group in January 2025. He previously served as chief field operations officer beginning in January 2024, overseeing the company’s three primary operating segments: Performance Foodservice, Core-Mark, and Vistar. Before joining PFG’s executive team, McPherson served as chief executive officer of Core-Mark and has more than 30 years of experience in sales, marketing, supply chain management, and operations.
Manuel A. Fernandez, lead independent director of the board, said the transition follows a multi-year succession planning process and supports the company’s strategy outlined at its 2025 investor day.
“Scott is a proven leader with a deep understanding of PFG and, in his current role as COO, was a key architect in the development of our strategic objectives,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez also credited Holm with leading Performance Food Group through its transition from private ownership to a publicly traded company and expanding its scale and market position.
“During his tenure, George guided PFG from private ownership to being a publicly traded company, growing it significantly and building the foundation that has established PFG as a leading food and foodservice distributor in the United States,” Fernandez said.
Performance Food Group is one of the largest food and foodservice distribution companies in North America, operating in more than 150 locations and serving more than 300,000 customer sites. The Fortune 100 company employs approximately 43,000 associates and is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia.
