Samsung’s Acquisition of FläktGroup Signals Bigger Push into U.S. HVAC Distribution

Samsung Electronics has announced the acquisition of German HVAC manufacturer FläktGroup for €1.5 billion ($1.62 billion), in a move that expands the company’s capabilities in applied and engineered HVAC systems and strengthens its position in the U.S. commercial and industrial HVAC market.

The deal, expected to close by the end of 2025, gives Samsung a foothold in complex HVAC applications, including data centers, hospitals, airports, manufacturing plants, and large institutional facilities. FläktGroup, headquartered in Herne, Germany, supplies high-efficiency air handling units and precision cooling systems used in temperature- and humidity-sensitive environments. The company also provides HVAC control technologies under its FläktEdge platform.

This acquisition follows Samsung’s 2024 joint venture with Lennox International, which gave Samsung access to a broad U.S. distribution network for residential and light commercial systems. With FläktGroup, Samsung gains a complementary portfolio aimed at large-scale projects, opening the door to expanded engagement with commercial and industrial distributors across North America.

According to Samsung, the applied HVAC market is projected to grow from $61 billion in 2024 to $99 billion by 2030, with the data center cooling segment expected to grow at an annual rate of 18%. The company cited the growing demand for efficient, integrated HVAC solutions amid the continued expansion of data infrastructure, manufacturing capacity, and regulated facilities in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and food production.

FläktGroup has reported robust performance in the data center cooling segment, offering both air and liquid-based systems designed to reduce energy consumption. In 2024, the company received the DCS Cooling Innovation of the Year Award for advancements in cooling technology.

Samsung stated that the acquisition will allow it to offer a complete range of HVAC systems, spanning residential, commercial, and large-scale applications. The integration of Samsung’s building management platform, b. IoT, with FläktGroup’s control technology is expected to support growth in HVAC system monitoring, maintenance, and energy optimization services.

For U.S. HVAC distributors, the deal introduces a new competitor in the engineered systems category, which has traditionally been dominated by long-established U.S. and international OEMs. Samsung’s expanded HVAC business will now include product lines tailored to data centers, life sciences, industrial facilities, and other specialized applications—areas where distributor partnerships have historically played a significant role in system specification, installation, and service support.

FläktGroup brings a customer base of more than 60 large-scale companies in sectors including pharmaceuticals, biotech, food and beverage, and advanced manufacturing. Samsung has indicated that it plans to leverage these relationships alongside its existing global infrastructure to support continued expansion in North America and other key markets.

The company said the acquisition reinforces its strategy to grow HVAC into a major business segment, alongside its recent investments in robotics, medical devices, and connected technologies.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close later this year.

Industry analysts have offered mixed reactions to Samsung’s acquisition of FläktGroup. Greg Roh, head of research at Hyundai Motor Securities, commented, “This acquisition is more about reinforcing its consumer electronics and home appliance businesses, so it is not the game-changing deal the market had been hoping for.” Roh further noted, “It feels like the company is playing it safe rather than making bold bets.”

Despite these reservations, the acquisition is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Samsung’s position in the growing HVAC market, particularly in the data center cooling segment. The integration of FläktGroup’s advanced cooling technologies and customer base is expected to enhance Samsung’s competitiveness in this sector.

As the transaction progresses, industry stakeholders will be closely monitoring how Samsung leverages FläktGroup’s assets to expand its HVAC offerings and distribution channels in the U.S. market.
