Privately owned housing units authorized by building permits in September were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,428,000, 2.9% below August and 5.7% below September 2023.
Single-family authorizations in September were at a rate of 970,000; this is 0.3% above August. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were 398,000 in September.
Housing completions in September were 1,680,000, down 5.7% from August. It is 14.6% higher than the September 2023 rate. Single-family housing completions in September were down 2.7% from August. The September rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 671,000.
