Standard Motor Products, Inc., a distributor and manufacturer of automotive replacement parts, has opened a new national distribution center in Shawnee, Kansas, marking a significant expansion of its logistics operations in the Midwest.
The 575,000-square-foot facility officially opened June 17.
The new center will increase the company’s U.S. distribution footprint by more than 200,000 square feet once SMP completes the transition to the new distribution center from an existing one in Edwardsville, less than five miles away. SMP plans to close the Edwardsville location by the end of the year.
The new larger distribution center will integrate advanced distribution technologies, including a mechanized material handling system designed to improve logistics capabilities, operational efficiencies, and enhance the overall experience for employees, customers, and suppliers, the distributor said.
SMP said it expects the facility to reduce lead times and improve fulfillment speed and service reliability for its nationwide customer base.
In its most recent financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, SMP reported net sales of $413.4 million, a 24.7% increase compared to $331.4 million in the same quarter of 2024. Net income was $12.56 million compared with $8.82 million in the first quarter of 2024.
Eric Sills, SMP’s chair and CEO, expressed optimism about the new center’s role in improving operational efficiency. “Our new Shawnee distribution center will expand our capacity, improve turnaround times, and provide automation efficiencies for our customers,” he said.
Founded in 1919, Standard Motor Products distributes automotive replacement parts to retailers, warehouse distributors, and vehicle manufacturers in North America and international markets.
