TopBuild, one of the largest installers and distributors of insulation and building materials in the U.S. and Canada, is pushing deeper into commercial and industrial construction as demand for new housing remains soft. The company installs insulation and related materials in homes, offices, factories, data centers, hospitals and schools, and supplies contractors through its nationwide distribution network.
CEO Robert Buck said TopBuild is expanding beyond its traditional focus on residential construction, pointing to its recent purchase of Progressive Roofing as a major step. “We have accomplished a great deal in 2025 to date, most recently closing the acquisition of Progressive Roofing and establishing a new platform for growth in the large and highly complementary roofing services sector,” Buck said.
The deal gives TopBuild a foothold in commercial roofing, which Buck called “a natural adjacency” to the company’s core insulation business. He said the company now wants to offer a full range of services on large commercial projects—combining roofing, insulation and mechanical system installations—while reducing its reliance on the ups and downs of the housing market. “We are encouraged by the ongoing positive trends in our heavy commercial and industrial end markets and excited about our long runway of new opportunities in commercial roofing,” Buck said.
TopBuild is also trimming and reorganizing its network of local branches to focus on areas with stronger growth. Earlier this year, it closed 33 locations and restructured operations to cut costs and improve efficiency. “Our teams’ efforts early in the year to align our cost structure with the current demand landscape and drive operational improvements are reflected in our healthy second quarter performance,” Buck said.
He added that the company expects Progressive Roofing’s growth to help offset slower housing demand. “We remain optimistic that the long-term fundamentals for our business are strong and confident in our ability to drive increased shareholder returns,” Buck said, noting that acquiring more commercial-focused companies will remain a top priority.
For the second quarter of 2025, TopBuild reported sales of $1.30 billion, down 5.0% from a year earlier, with net income of $151.6 million, up slightly from $150.7 million. In the first half of the year, sales reached $2.53 billion, down 4.3% from the same period in 2024, while net income was $275.0 million, down from $303.1 million a year ago.
