Medline Reroutes Medical Supply Operations After Tracy Distribution Center Fire

Why This Matters to Distributors: The Tracy fire highlights the importance of network redundancy and contingency planning in modern distribution. Medline’s ability to quickly reroute inventory, transportation assets and order fulfillment responsibilities to alternate facilities will serve as a closely watched test of supply chain resiliency. The investigation into the reported failure of the building’s private fire water system may also draw attention to fire protection infrastructure and risk management practices at large distribution centers across the industry.

Medline Industries has shifted product distribution to other facilities across its network and expanded transportation capacity following the June 11 fire that destroyed its Tracy, California, distribution center, as the company works to maintain service for healthcare providers throughout Northern California.

The fire was reported at approximately 1 p.m. at Medline’s facility at 5701 Promontory Parkway, according to the City of Tracy. Firefighters arriving at the scene encountered a rapidly developing roof fire at the approximately 1 million-square-foot warehouse.

The city said early firefighting efforts were hindered by a failure of the building’s private fire water system, which significantly affected initial suppression operations. High winds, low humidity, and elevated temperatures contributed to the rapid spread of the fire throughout the facility.

No injuries were reported, and all employees and on-site personnel were safely evacuated and accounted for, according to the City of Tracy and Medline.

In the aftermath of the fire, Medline activated a command center and implemented a network contingency plan designed to maintain customer service levels. The company said products previously distributed through the Tracy facility have been reassigned to other distribution centers and that most affected order lines have already been rerouted through its regional network.

Medline also said it has increased inventory, staffing and transportation resources throughout the region, including expanded use of its MedTrans fleet, third-party carriers, and truck relay operations to support product movement.

“Our priority right now is supporting our team after the fire that impacted this Medline distribution facility,” the company said in a statement. “We remain incredibly grateful that all Medline employees and on-site personnel were safely evacuated and accounted for.”
