Why It Matters to Distributors: Faster development cycles can shorten the time required to launch and improve ecommerce and customer tools, an area of increasing competitive pressure across distribution.
Builders FirstSource is expanding its use of artificial intelligence in software development, saying a new partnership with Blitzy has accelerated the pace of building internal and customer-facing digital tools.
The building materials distributor reported a three- to fivefold increase in development speed in early use cases during the first three months of using the platform. The company also said about 120 engineers have been trained on AI-based development workflows as part of the rollout.
Builders FirstSource is using Blitzy’s platform to support development across its enterprise systems, with the goal of shortening timelines for new features and applications. The software applies an “agentic” model, in which multiple AI systems generate, test and refine code within large, existing codebases.
Gayatri Narayan, president of technology at Builders FirstSource, said the company is using AI tools to improve how quickly it can deliver new capabilities to customers and internal teams.
The effort comes as companies increase investment in AI-assisted coding tools but report mixed results. Data cited in the announcement shows AI coding assistants account for 55% of departmental AI spending, while only 26% of AI-generated code is merged without significant rework, reflecting challenges in applying the technology to complex enterprise environments.
Blitzy said its platform is designed to address those limitations by analyzing existing codebases and automating much of the development process. The company said the system can complete more than 80% of a software project, with engineers responsible for final validation and integration.
Builders FirstSource did not disclose financial terms of the agreement or identify specific applications tied to the deployment.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts across distribution and manufacturing to embed AI into digital operations, particularly in ecommerce, pricing, and customer experience platforms.
