Mountainland Supply Expands Utility Business with Northern Power Equipment Acquisition

Why This Matters to Distributors: The deal underscores continued consolidation among regional distributors as companies expand into utility and infrastructure markets. Adding electrical transmission and distribution products gives Mountainland Supply greater exposure to utility, municipal and grid modernization projects, diversifying its business beyond traditional plumbing and waterworks markets.

Mountainland Supply has acquired Northern Power Equipment, a Utah-based distributor specializing in electrical utility products, expanding its footprint in the power transmission and distribution market across the Intermountain West.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The transaction broadens Mountainland Supply’s utility product portfolio by adding Northern Power Equipment’s expertise in high-voltage overhead and underground transmission and distribution equipment. The combined company will serve contractors, municipalities, utilities, and rural electric cooperatives throughout the region.

“Their long history of putting the customer first aligns perfectly with the goals of our employee-owned company,” said Mountainland CEO Joey Liddle

Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Centerville, Utah, Northern Power Equipment supplies wire, transformers, switchgear, poles, cro. ssarms, pole-line hardware, enclosures, connectors, and underground utility equipment. Its customers include municipal utilities, rural electric associations, commercial contractors, and other utility providers.

Mountainland Supply said the acquisition strengthens its position in the electrical utility market while expanding its ability to support infrastructure projects throughout the Intermountain West.

Based in Orem, Utah, Mountainland Supply was founded in 1947 and operates as a 100% employee-owned company through an employee stock ownership plan. The distributor employs more than 1,000 people and operates more than 50 locations across the western and Midwestern United States.

The company distributes waterworks, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning products, turf and agricultural irrigation equipment, pumps, drilling products, power equipment, tools and safety supplies to contractors, municipalities, institutions, mining operations, and residential and commercial construction customers.

The acquisition reflects a broader strategy among regional distributors to expand into infrastructure-related markets through acquisitions. Demand for electrical transmission and distribution equipment has remained strong as utilities invest in grid modernization, system reliability, and capacity upgrades to meet growing electricity demand.
